Town council begins budget season

Town Manager Greg Schulte presented the preliminary budget for 2016 during Tuesday night’s town council meeting, explaining there was no action required on the matter at this time; it was for informational purposes only.

There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss the details during the upcoming budget season, which includes two work sessions on Oct. 23 and 29, a public hearing and the first reading of an ordinance on Nov. 19 and the final adoption on Dec. 1.

Schulte then listed a number of noteworthy aspects of the budget.

On the revenue side of things, “The economic outlook for the town continues to be positive,” Schulte explained. “The past year has been a very busy year and that was evidenced by the amount of traffic and visitors in the community.”

While data from the Colorado Department of Revenue concerning sales tax collections and the door counters at the Pagosa Springs Visitor Center indicate a robust number of tourists, the lodgers’ tax for 2015 so far has not demonstrated the same growth experienced in previous years, which is at odds with what seems to be occurring in town.
