Wreaths Across America Wreath Day planning and sponsorships are underway for Hilltop Cemetery in Pagosa Springs, and other area cemeteries as well.

This year celebrates four years of local participation in the annual event of honoring, remembering and teaching about our veterans through the use of handcrafted, live balsam wreaths that are transported from Maine each year.

The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Vets 4 Vets sponsorship groups have teamed up to honor our fallen veterans locally by seeking sponsorships to place wreaths of remembrance at their graves.

With your help, it is our goal to once again cover all 400 plus known veteran graves at Hilltop. Any sponsorship overflow will assist our neighbors in Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio. About 2,300 wreath sponsorships are needed for complete coverage.

Sponsored wreaths are $17 and will be placed at grave sites on Wreath Day, Dec. 16, at Hilltop Cemetery following the 10 a.m. Remembrance Ceremony. The public is encouraged to join for the ceremony and wreath laying.

Grave-specific wreath requests are also available locally and across the country at participating cemeteries. More information on special offerings like Grave Specific, Patriot Pairs and other special arrangements can be found through the sponsorship groups’ websites listed below or the organization’s website, www.WreathsAcrossAmerica.org. The sponsorship deadline is Nov. 27.

All sponsorships and donations through your favorite sponsorship group allows for these groups to continue their missions. Sponsorships are tax-deductible. Contact members of these organizations for assistance with your sponsorship wishes, use the Web address provided, or contact the local coordinator, Linda Hobbs, at (713) 304-2028 or lindahobbs713@gmail.com.
