The San Juan Stargazers want to make sure you don’t miss the annular solar eclipse.
On Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9:12 a.m. to 12:05 p.m., Pagosa Springs will see an awesome partial eclipse with 88 percent coverage which will peak at 10:35 a.m.
Ideally, you want to be in the path of the moon’s shadow, called annularity, to view the “Ring of Fire.” In order to get in the moon’s shadow (or umbra), you will need to travel west of Durango or south to the Farmington, N.M., area.
You must use eclipse glasses to view this spectacular event. We recommend they be ISO 12312-2 certified. Be sure to examine them for scratches or any other damage prior to use.
The next total solar eclipse in Colorado won’t be until 2045.
Important safety
message
Never use eclipse glasses to view the sun through binoculars or a telescope. This can cause permanent eye damage. Light must be filtered going into the telescope using a special solar filter specifically designed for the telescope tube.
