The milling and repaving of North Pagosa Boulevard between the U.S. 160 intersection and Bastille Drive will begin on May 3, according to a press release from Archuleta County Communications Specialist Ashley Springer.

Springer explains that the project will also involve milling and repaving of a short section of Navajo Trail Drive from the intersection with North Pagosa Boulevard to the entrance to the Cowboy Car Wash.

In an interview, Springer stated that work will begin on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and continue until Saturday morning at 6 a.m. before resuming at 7 p.m. Saturday and ending at 6 a.m. Sunday.

According to Springer, traffic control and flaggers will be in place Friday night and Saturday night, and the roadway will be open for traffic during the day, although it will be narrowed and traffic will likely be slowed.

She indicated that contractor Four Corners Materials will aim to complete the milling of the roadway over the weekend with work to continue next week.

Springer stated that that work will occur at night for the remainder of the project, with no total closures occurring at any point and the roadway open to traffic flow during the day.

She added that project engineer Mike Davis of Davis Engineering advises residents to attempt to avoid traveling through the area during the project since traffic will likely be slowed or backed up.

She notes that the businesses most impacted by the work will include the Speedway and Marathon gas stations, The Buck Stops Here Market and Eatery, the Cowboy Car Wash and the Pagosa Fire Protection District offices.

Archuleta County Road and Bridge Manager Eric McRae notes in a communication that Four Corners Materials will begin staging equipment for the project on May 1, although this should not cause significant traffic impacts or disruptions.

In the press release, Springer states that the project should be completed before Memorial Day weekend.

“The County wishes to thank residents for their patience during this necessary Construction,” Springer concludes.

In other road construction news, McRae indicates that a culvert replacement project at Martinez Creek on North Pagosa Boulevard that the county began last November will be finalized in the next week with final cleanup work being completed.

Magnesium chloride schedule

Springer reports that magnesium chloride application on county roads will begin on May 6 in the Arboles area and move up County Road (CR) 500 toward Pagosa Springs.

According to the county magnesium chloride treatment list, treatment will begin with a number of roads in the Arboles area before working up the lower end of CR 500 and CR 700.

Treatment will continue on a range of roads in the vicinity of Meadows Drive and South Pagosa Boulevard before shifting into roads in the Chris Mountain Village, Trails and Vista subdivisions.

Roads in other areas of the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association will be treated next, with work moving northward and eastward between and adjacent to North Pagosa Boulevard and Piedra Road (CR 600) before moving east along U.S. 160 to treat Pike Drive, CR 400 and CR 200.

Treatment will then move south along U.S. 84, including roads in the Rio Blanco Basin area and the Chromo area.

Treatment will conclude with the upper portion of CR 500.

McRae explains that the magnesium chloride application process is expected to take approximately two months to complete, although weather or emergencies could change this schedule.
