Mountain snow, valley rain moves in

The mountain snow and valley rain that moved in Wednesday could bring "plenty of precip" to eastern Utah and western Colorado, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

In a weather briefing issued Wednesday morning, the NWS notes that winter weather advisories have been issued for most mountainous terrain and are valid through Thursday morning.

It further notes that rain and snow will wane on Thursday, but not completely end.

"Showers will continue as an area of low pressure drops southward over Utah and taps into Pacific moisture," it states.

It adds the low will cut off somewhere near the Las Vegas area and bring widespread rain and snow to southeast Utah and southwest Colorado, but notes that uncertainty remains for this portion of the forecast because "models tend to perform poorly with cutoff lows."

Forecast snowfall amounts will likely change over the coming days, it states, but, as of now, a foot or more of new snow is possible for the San Juan Mountains.

A winter stom warning has been issued for for the southwest San Juan Mountains.
