Commissioner Veronica Medina visited Pagosa Peak Open School first-graders on Sept. 28 for its Career Week event. The purpose of her visit was to inform students of the tools used to do her job effectively.

Medina spoke on various topics, including the difference between the town and the county, the American flag, the Colorado Constitution and a class favorite, potholes.

She presented and explained the 50 states and 13 stripes of the American flag and what they represent, displayed a county map and stressed the importance of reading by showing students the Colorado Constitution.

“This is full of the rules we have to follow,” she said, showing the class a physical copy. “This is why it’s important to know how to read.”

Medina encouraged the importance of learning all topics taught at the school.

“Early education, specifically that which involves hands-on learning, is crucial to the future of our students,” Medina said.

She then asked the class if they had any questions, to which one student responded, “What is your favorite part of your job?”

“Serving the county,” Medina stated, “and everyone who lives here.”

Medina left the class with American flag-printed wooden airplanes.

Pagosa Peak Open School is a tuition-free, public charter school. More information about the school can be found at pagosapeakopenschool.org.
