Join us for Action Sunday at the Pagosa Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship this Sunday, April 27.
We begin at 10:30 a.m. and welcome Leonard Martinez, organizer of Friends and Neighbors in Need, a local, faith-based organization filling a need in our community. Friends and Neighbors in Need organized officially and launched last September.
Its mission: To provide emergency services and identify systemic issues to the appropriate agencies for our most vulnerable in Archuleta County.
Martinez has been involved with this effort and we are happy to host him as we learn more about the needs in our community and how we can be in partnership with those affected.
The UU Fellowship holds six shared values, all centered around love. Two of the values stand out as we focus on the purpose for this Action Sunday, one being pluralism: we believe that all are sacred beings, diverse in culture, experience and theology. The second is justice, working to be a diverse, multicultural beloved community where all feel welcome and can thrive. (Source: UUA.org/beliefs/shared-values)
We gather in community to make friends, grow our spirits and do good works.
This week, meditation practice and dharma talk will be from 9 until about 10:15 a.m.
The monthly schedule is as follows: the first and third Sundays of the month are calm-abiding and tonglen meditation practices from 9 to 9:40 a.m. The second and fourth Sundays are calm-abiding, tonglen and mantra practices followed by a short dharma talk and discussion from 9 to 10:15 a.m.
The instructor for this Buddhist practice, Dan Dempster, is a certified meditation instructor and authorized dharma teacher, for over 18 years a student of Khenpo Migmar Tseten, Buddhist chaplain at Harvard University.
Dempster stated, “Newcomers are always welcome as those more experienced deepen their practice. These are simple, yet profound and beautiful practices based on cultivating the four immeasurables (love, compassion, joy and equanimity). Please bring your favorite cookies to share over tea. Come regularly to deepen your practice. Attending group practice will also encourage, support and reinforce your daily home practice.”
The Pagosa UU Fellowship meets in-person on the first and third Sundays of the month at 10:30 a.m. for Sunday service. The second Sunday is the Going Deeper Sharing Circle, also at 10:30 a.m., while the fourth Sunday is for putting our energy towards actions.
Find us in Unit B-15 of the Greenbriar Plaza, 301 N. Pagosa Blvd., on the north side facing Pagosa Peak. We welcome diversity and invite everyone to share in our faith community.
