Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Work toward creating a safer tomorrow continues

Posted

As Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) comes to a close, we reflect with deep gratitude on the powerful conversations, awareness campaigns and community efforts that took place throughout April.

Yet, the work of creating a safer tomorrow does not end with the turning of the calendar.

At Rise Above Violence, we know that real change happens year-round, through everyday actions, continued education and a shared commitment to building a community where everyone feels safe, supported and heard.

This year’s SAAM theme — “Together We Act, United We Change” — reminds us that each voice and action matters.

Ending sexual violence takes more than awareness; it takes daily choices rooted in respect, accountability and empathy.

We are especially grateful for the incredible support received from our community throughout April.

From the Womens’ Clothing and Gear Swap to everyone who participated in the Push-Up Challenge to raise awareness, fun-raise and “Push Up” Survivors, to those who marched on Denim Day — your dedication showed that together, we are stronger. Your willingness to stand with survivors and advocate for change inspires all of us to keep pushing forward.

As we step into May, we also honor Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize that healing from trauma and building safe communities must include mental and emotional well-being. Supporting survivors means not just responding in moments of crisis, but walking alongside them through their journeys of healing and resilience.

At Rise, we believe prevention and healing go hand in hand. Every time we model consent, offer a listening ear, challenge a harmful joke or advocate for supportive services, we are planting seeds of change. Creating a safer tomorrow starts with the choices that we make today.

How you can continue to make a difference

• Volunteer your time: Our volunteers are the heart of our mission. Whether staffing hotlines, assisting with events or providing support to survivors, your time makes a real difference. We are immeasurably grateful for all or volunteers do.

• Educate yourself and others: Keep learning about the realities of sexual violence and mental health.

• Share your knowledge: Conversations lead to change.

• Support survivors: Believe survivors. Respond with compassion. Healing happens in spaces built on empathy.

• Speak Up: Small actions — like challenging harmful language or promoting consent education — create lasting impact.

• Donate or fundraise: Financial support ensures Rise can continue providing critical, often lifesaving services at no cost to survivors.

As SAAM ends, we invite you to stay connected and stay involved. Together, we can continue building a community where safety, dignity and hope are not reserved for just one month, but are part of the fabric of our everyday lives and our community.

Thank you for standing with us, believing in this work and helping us create a safer, stronger tomorrow. Together we rise.
