The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), its divisions and affiliates are once again offering scholarships to SME student members seeking a career in the mining and minerals industries.
An application window for the 2024 SME scholarship season is currently open through Oct. 15.
Last year, $715,838 in scholarships was awarded by SME Divisions, the SME Foundation, WAAIME and the Underground Construction Association (UCA). This figure represents nearly half of the approximately $1.5 million in total financial aid given out in 2023 when including the SME Foundation’s PhD Fellowship and Academic Career Development Grant programs.
“Given the urgent need to replenish a workforce tasked with meeting soaring mineral demands, SME remains resolute in ensuring a steady pipeline of talented young professionals,” said David L. Kanagy, SME executive director and CEO. “SME is blessed with an outstanding network of student members, and helping to facilitate their success with opportunities like these is core to our mission.”
