“This Is Your Watershed: Upper San Juan River,” a three-part film series about Archuleta County’s water, is now complete.
The third film, “Threats to Our Water,” will premiere on May 20 at the Pagosa Lodge, 3505 U.S. 160. The doors will open to the free event at 5:30 p.m. After discussions about water conclude around 8:30 p.m., networking can continue as guests enjoy a cash bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres.
The educational project was written and produced by acclaimed local filmmaker Christi Bode with the San Juan Water Conservancy District (SJWCD). The three films were funded by the Colorado Water Conservation Board and the SJWCD.
In 2024, the SJWCD shared the first two films in the three-part series. “The Value of Snow” and “The Waterways that Connect Us” can be viewed on SJWCD’s website, www.sjwcd.org.
Also available on www.sjwcd.org is Josh Kurz’s most recent local water diagram. Kurz is a hydrologist and science teacher at Pagosa Springs High School. Kurz consults with the SJWCD and shares his expertise with the community on a regular basis.
Representatives from water organizations will describe their different perspectives at the May 20 event. Topics of interest may include early spring snow melt, moisture content in forest soil, fish health in a low water level or community preparedness for wildfire. Guests will bring their concerns to discuss with environmental experts. Reviewing Kurz’s updated graphic helps us discuss the community’s future water supply and demand.
The SJWCD invites the community to the May 20 film event. There is no charge.
The mission of the SJWCD is to be an active leader in all issues affecting the water resources of the Upper San Juan River Basin.
