Letter: Peaceful protest

Posted

Dear Editor:

Recent news reports, including those from Reuters, suggest that the Trump administration is already preparing to accuse the upcoming October 18 national protests of violence. This maneuver is deeply concerning, yet not unexpected.

These attempts to preemptively vilify dissent are straight from the authoritarian playbook: discredit, divide, and intimidate citizens into silence.

Let me be unequivocally clear: our movement is committed to nonviolence as a core, foundational principle—not just a talking point. Our organized events strictly prohibit weapons, prioritize de-escalation training, and demand that all participants uphold this commitment to peaceful assembly.

The strength of any lasting movement lies in its discipline, courage, and values. Peaceful protest is our strength, and history proves it is the only way movements ultimately win.

The best defense against attacks on our fundamental rights is to fully exercise them. That’s why we urge everyone to show up on October 18 firmly and strategically. Let’s make this a powerful, peaceful demonstration with joy in our hearts.

The Trump administration’s strategy is to fracture our movement. But we are building a united coalition together, across race, class, and geography, and we know that unity is the only path to victory. We are not backing down.

We invite you to be part of this national movement. Join Pagosa’s peaceful protest at Town Park, 10:30 a.m., on October 18.
