Lois Jene Zuege (née Van Horn), age 94, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2025, in Pagosa Springs, Colo. Born on April 27, 1930, in Wray, Colo., Lois lived most of her long and meaningful life in Haigler, Neb., with her husband, Stan. Her life was rooted in family, hard work and the enduring spirit of her country lifestyle.
Raised in the open spaces of Colorado, Lois developed a deep love for ranch life from an early age. She often shared fond memories of riding horses to the country school — stories that reflected both her adventurous nature and her deep connection to the land and family heritage. Her early years were shaped by responsibility and compassion; as a young girl, she helped raise her siblings with unwavering devotion.
Lois began her working life as a telephone operator in Wray before moving to Denver to run the switchboard at Miller Stockman’s. Her career path reflected her adaptability and strong work ethic. Later, she found joy in serving others as a waitress at the Friendly K Cafe in Haigler. She also worked at Tri State Distributors in Wray for Thayne and Ester Johnson, and later contributed her talents at the local pharmacy. In every role she held, Lois brought warmth and dedication.
Family was always at the heart of Lois’ life. She was foremost a mother and grandmother whose kindness touched generations. She shared many cherished moments with her husband, Stanley L. Zuege, during camping trips with their children — a time filled with laughter, stories around campfires and lasting memories.
Lois is lovingly remembered by her son, Stanley Dale Zuege; grandchildren Rikki Jene, Jeremy and Joshua Zuege; great-granddaughters Isabella Jene and Alexa Lynn Zuege; sister Betsy Zimmerman; brothers Roger and Larry Van Horn; and cousin Evelyn Stover; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She now joins those who passed before her: her beloved husband, Stanley L. Zuege; daughter Lori Jene; parents Raymond L. and Gertrude Van Horn; stepmothers Blanche Van Horn and Mercel Tiff; brothers Frank, Link, Ralph “Buddy” Van Horn, Thayne Johnson and Rick Van Horn; sisters Edith Roundtree, Mary Van Horn and Ellen Meents; her Uncle Charlie and Aunt Lizzie Van Horn, who helped raise Lois after the passing of her birth mother.
Lois found joy in simple pleasures — reading books that transported her to other worlds and listening to old-time country music that echoed the rhythms of her own life. Riding Harley Davidsons with her cousin Marvin was an especially fond memory. Her kind heart left an indelible mark on all who knew them.
May their memories bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire love across generations.
