Dear Editor:
Recently, this paper’s editor stated in an editorial that she had been getting complaints from readers that the letters to the editor were unfairly representing only one side of the political spectrum. She encouraged people with opposing views to write their own letters and provided the parameters for successful publication.
I’ve noticed that letters have been mostly expressions of shock, horror, outrage, and sorrow with what the Trump administration hath wrought. But I expected some pushback letters in the next week’s Sun edition. Surprisingly, no MAGA support letters — although there was a letter complaining that the Sun had started “leaning left” with publication of letters since they were purchased.
One thing I appreciate about this paper is that it publishes all the letters no matter how poorly written or dumb. I reckon you’d have to be pretty offensive or libelous to get culled. The Sun was purchased in September, 2023, during the Biden administration. As a regular reader of the letters, I can attest that there were many “right leaning” letters published right up until . . . just a few months ago. Hmmm. What could be happening here? Perhaps people are finding it difficult to provide a sane and coherent defense of what’s going on in CrazyTown, USA.
Our country is being run by billionaires who want to increase efficiency by instantaneously eliminating programs supporting ordinary Americans, impoverished nations and the environment. Republican controlled Congress has relinquished its duty to check the power of the Executive and Judiciary while still trying to pass voter suppression legislation (the SAVE Act) and extending tax cuts benefiting the wealthy.
Was it only weeks ago that we were preoccupied with that incredibly stupid, careless, and treasonous national security breach by high officials in our government? Signalgate! All forgotten now! Because now we are watching in horror as the world economy tanks thanks to our capricious, vindictive, and mentally unbalanced president. Let’s call it Tariffgate. The resulting selloff of US Treasury bonds by international investors and suddenly our president realizes he doesn’t have the cards! He caves on some tariffs but we’re still screwed because he remains our president and the rest of the world is beginning to realize they have to create alliances and trade deals that excludes the US. They can’t trust us anymore.
We are now a country that sends people off to foreign prisons without due process based on their tattoos. Our president says out loud he wants to send American citizens as well and intends building immigrant lockups to the tune of $45 billion (with a B). Sounds efficient and not bloaty.
They have weaponized antisemitism, applying that term to people who oppose the genocide in Gaza. Legal immigrants and residents who publicly oppose Israel’s actions have been arrested by masked, plainclothed officers. The lawlessness of this administration and the fact that anyone opposing it is “the enemy within” means that none of us is safe. It’s called fascism, people. Anyone care to write a letter to this paper defending it?
