Lady Pirates remain undefeated in league play

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate basketball team is 4-0 in 3A/4A Intermountain League play after successive victories against Alamosa and Montezuma-Cortez on Jan. 24 and 25 in Pagosa Springs.

The Lady Pirates also defeated the 2A Del Norte Tigers on the road Tuesday, bringing their overall season record to 10-4.

Against the Alamosa Mean Moose on Jan. 24, the Lady Pirate offense struck early to build a 12-point lead by halftime, limiting the visitors to seven and eight points for the first half. Pagosa would go on to score 32 more points during the 59-38 victory.

Elizabeth Currier led in scoring against Alamosa, adding 18 points to the team’s total. Karsyn Shahan scored 12 points, followed by Kylie Ketchum’s 11. Lexi Campbell and Kaila Limebrook each had six points on the night.

Shahan led the team’s rebounding efforts with 10 total on the night, followed by Campbell’s six. Adelyn Hittle and Currier each brought down five.

The Lady Pirates counted 13 turnovers against Alamosa, in addition to 14 assists and nine steals. The team sank seven out of 10 free-throw attempts.

Facing the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers on Jan. 25, the home squad’s offense built a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter that the Panther defense managed to quiet for much of the second.

By halftime, the Lady Pirates led 28-26.

But outscoring the visitors 29-10 in the third quarter helped build a lead that Pagosa never relinquished in its 69-47 win.

The Lady Pirate senior trio again led the team’s scoring efforts against the Panthers, with Currier adding 16 points and Shahan scoring 12. Ketchum finished the day with 10 points.

Limebrook and Shahan led the team’s rebounding effort with five a piece, followed by Currier, Ketchum, Hittle and Amber Snarr, who all brought down four.

The team counted 13 turnovers and 11 steals against the Panthers, as well as 11 total assists — with Currier responsible for six.

The Lady Pirates made five of 11 free-throw attempts.

On the road for Tuesday’s contest against the Tigers, the Lady Pirates again excelled from both ends of the court, limiting their hosts to single-digit scoring for three quarters and racking up double-digit points of their own throughout the 54-34 victory.

Against the Panthers, it was Shanan leading the team’s offense with 16 points, followed by Hittle with 15 points. Ketchum and Currier each scored nine.

Shahan again led the team in rebounds with 10, followed by Kethchum’s nine. Currier and Snarr each added four to the team’s total of 33.

Pagosa’s turnovers in Del Norte numbered to 16, with 13 steals and 11 assists. The team made seven of 13 free-throw attempts.

Coach Sarah Osborn could not be reached for comment by press time Wednesday.

Looking ahead, the Lady Pirates will face two additional conference opponents when they travel to Bayfield on Friday and host Centauri on Saturday.

Play against the Bayfield Wolverines, currently 0-4 in league play, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday at Bayfield High School.

Hosting the Centauri Falcons, who stand undefeated in conference matchups at 5-0, tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pagosa Springs High School.
