An inmate from the Archuleta County detention center was pronounced deceased Thursday, April 3, at Mercy Regional Medical Center.
According to an April 6 press release from the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), on Monday, March 31, at approximately 2:10 p.m., ACSO detention center staff were made aware that inmate Wyatt Kelm, 26, was found unconscious and unresponsive within the facility.
The press release explains ACSO staff began lifesaving efforts immediately, and Kelm was transported via ambulance to Pagosa Springs Medical Center for advanced medical treatment.
On Thursday, April 3, at 5:06 p.m., Kelm was pronounced deceased at Mercy Regional Medical Center, it notes.
The incident is under investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
According to Rob Low, strategic communications director for CBI, Kelm was arrested at 10:35 p.m. on March 28 and arrived at the jail at 11:11 p.m.
According to Low, Kelm was arrested on charges of:
• Unlawful possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl).
• Unlawful possession of a controlled substance (heroin, meth and cocaine).
• Unlawful Possession of a controlled substance (clonazepam).
• Six counts of possession of drug paraphernalia (six glass pipes with residue).
• Open alcoholic beverage container.
• Open marijuana container.
• Two counts of violation of a protection order.
No other information was released, with Low citing the investigation.
