Firewood permits available for San Juan National Forest

Posted

Firewood permits are now available for purchase through a new online e-permit system or in person at U.S. Forest Service offices and with local vendors.

Permits may be purchased by computer or mobile device at any time, eliminating travel to your local Forest Service office.

Permits purchased online must be printed on paper and carried to the field to be valid.

Each permit costs $20 and allows firewood cutters to gather 2.5 cords of dead and downed firewood from the San Juan National Forest for personal use prior to Dec. 31. Each household may purchase additional tags for up to 10 cords of firewood per year.

A cord is the amount of tightly piled wood in a stack 4 feet high by 4 feet wide by 8 feet long.

Firewood cutters are required to have their chain saw equipped with an approved spark arrester when cutting wood and it is recommended they carry an ax or shovel.

Additional information on wood cutting regulations can be found at https://bit.ly/3GKjMxB.

Due to resource limitations, the San Juan National Forest headquarters office in Durango will no longer accept cash. Checks and credit cards will continue to be accepted.

Cash purchases can be made at participating vendors and all other San Juan National Forest offices.

In Pagosa Springs, permits can be purchased at the Pagosa Ranger District Office at 180 Pagosa St.

The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

E-permits are available at https://epermits.fs2c.usda.gov/.
