The Archuleta County landfill located at 9179 County Road 500 will now be open on Wednesdays to receive trash.
The decision to open on Wednesdays was unanimously approved by the Archuleta County Board of County Commissioners during a regular meeting held on Feb. 4.
According to the meeting’s agenda, the landfill will be open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The agenda also notes, “This closure was put in place while repairs were being made last year, since all repairs have been made there is no need to continue with this current schedule.”
Earlier in the day at a work session, Public Works Director Mike Torres explained that the Wednesday closure was initiated to give staff time to make repairs on cell 4B in the landfill.
“I see no need to stay closed on Wednesdays,” he added.
The landfill will now be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Torres indicated that commercial trash hauling companies and multiple disgruntled constituents have reached out requesting the landfill open on Wednesdays.
Torres also explained that staff is working on Wednesdays anyway, and that no additional staff hours will be required to accommodate the new schedule.
