Every year, we are afforded the pleasure of documenting the commencement ceremonies of Pagosa Springs High School and San Juan Mountain School.
This year, like every other, we are impressed with what these graduates have accomplished so far in their academic pursuits, in sports, through volunteering in the community and through their other efforts to make this world a better place.
And they’re only just getting started.
In this issue of The SUN, you’ll find a special section featuring Archuleta County’s graduates and their plans over the coming year and years. We encourage everyone to look at the varied plans of this year’s graduates.
These young adults — whether they know exactly what they want to do yet or not — will be entering the next phase of their lives with many valuable skills, good ideas and big dreams.
Let’s be sure we listen to them, support them and encourage them to continue to dream big.
We also remind our graduates to remember the people and things that have helped you get to where you are.
We also encourage you to be open to those who can help you get where you want, and who you can help as they accomplish their dreams.
In the words of Kermit the Frog during his “Kermencement” address to University of Maryland graduates on May 21, “Here’s a little advice, if you’re willing to listen to a frog: Rather than jumping over someone to get what you want, consider reaching out your hand and taking the leap side by side, because life is better when we leap together.”
We also offer some advice we strive to remember:
Thank people who help you. A sincere, handwritten thank you can mean a lot, both in your chance to reflect on what they’ve done and in allowing them to hear the impact they’ve made.
Be grateful for the little things and the big things.
Remember to stop and breathe, and get some fresh air. Find the beauty around you.
Listen to others and take their viewpoints into consideration. You don’t have to always agree, but be civil and willing to learn.
Dream big.
When life is busy, make time for people. Your relationships with your family and friends are important. As Kermit said, “It’s important to stay connected to your loved ones, stay connected to your friends and, most of all, stay connected to your dreams, no matter how big, no matter how impossible they seem. The truth is, dreams are how we figure out where we want to go, and life is how we get there.”
Remember there is so much ahead of you. Some of you will accomplish everything you have planned currently. Others will look back years from now and be thankful life had different plans for you because you couldn’t have imagined where you are.
No matter where life takes you, know that we wish each and every one of you nothing but the best.
Congratulations, graduates.
