Community hymn sing and ice cream social announced

End your Fourth of July weekend with this fun and festive event. On July 6 at 4 p.m., the Community United Methodist Church (CUMC) will host an old-fashioned community hymn sing in its sanctuary in downtown Pagosa Springs, 434 Lewis St.

The one-hour sing-along will be followed by an ice cream social in the fellowship hall. We’ll have everyone’s favorite ice cream flavors on hand with all the fun toppings. This family-friendly event should appeal to all ages, so bring your family and out-of-town holiday guests. The church offers plenty of off-street parking.

Hymn singing will be led jointly by the CUMC Choir and the St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church Choir — directed by Robert Neel and accompanied by Kathy Isberg. The CUMC Choir is led by Sarah Riehm, director of music ministries, who will accompany the hymns on the new three-manual Rodgers organ. Narrators will also tell the fascinating stories behind each of the hymns.

No matter what your faith tradition, you will enjoy singing these beloved traditional hymns. You’ll have a chance to vote for your favorite. The top three winners will earn a spot on the program, along with six other treasured favorites. What is your top choice? “Amazing Grace,” “In the Garden,” or “Be Thou My Vision”? Show up to vote to ensure your hymn winds up on the program of local Pagosa favorites.

The event is free and open to the public. A love offering will be taken during the concert to support future community concert events.
