Archuleta County has had quite a windy spring, which has required the landfill to close down with last-minute notice more often than we would like. In an effort to better communicate those closures with residents, Archuleta County Public Works Director Mike Torres has implemented a new hotline number residents can call on inclement weather days.
For both safety and environmental reasons, the state of Colorado implements regulations primarily to prevent windblown debris when sustained winds of 40 mph or more are prevalent. Sustained meaning one hour or longer. Landfill operators and county authorities have the final say, always keeping resident and employee safety at the forefront.
On windy or red flag days, please call (970) 264-8416 prior to making the trip down County Road 500. A recording will inform residents of the landfill’s current standing. In addition, the county communications team will continue to do its best in simultaneously updating social media.
The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
