American Legion seeking honor guard members

Posted

Uncle Sam had it right — we need you.

If you are a veteran, you are exactly who the Pagosa Springs’ American Legion Post #108 is seeking to join its honor guard.

As a member of the local honor guard, you would be joining a dedicated group of fellow veterans who represent the colors and spirit of our great flag and nation.

Wearing the uniform representing your branch within the military, along with the pride that comes from serving, as a member of the honor guard you would have a two-fold mission.

As the face of the “Military Family,” the honor guard (color guard) is present at the funerals of fellow veterans. The honor guard’s presence is a sign of respect to those who wore the weight of the uniform and a loving acknowledgement to their families.

In addition to funerals, the honor guard is periodically invited to perform final military honors and a variety of public appearances. These may include parades, public events including Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, and assisting with Wreaths Across America.

All ranks and MOS’s, from commanding position to enlisted, are encouraged to consider joining the honor guard. Proper military uniform is required, while belonging to a veteran organization is not required.

Interested veterans should be comfortable shooting a rifle, properly folding a flag and presenting to groups. Time commitment is based on your availability.

The bottom line is that the Pagosa Springs’ American Legion needs more veterans to continue the momentum of our pledge to our country, brothers and sisters. Older members need younger veterans to accept the torch of our allegiance the flag.

If you are a veteran with a heart for service, please consider joining the honor guard. We want you. We need you.
