Special to The PREVIEW
By popular demand, The Zikr Dance Ensemble will return to the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts for one performance only — Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and can be reserved by calling 731-7469 or going online at pagosacenter.org.
The Zikr Dance Ensemble is Denver’s newest professional dance company. Founded in 2009 by artistic director and choreographer David Taylor, formerly the director of the David Taylor Dance Theatre, Zikr offers a spectrum of works that are based on transcendent dance rituals from many different ancient world cultures throughout history, along with original and contemporary dance/theatre realizations.
Zikr’s roster includes some of Colorado’s finest, trained professional ballet dancers. The company has already presented successful Colorado performances to rave reviews in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Carbondale, Greenwood Village, Parker and Crested Butte, as well as in St. Paul, Minn., and Los Angeles, Calif.
The company presented two performances in Pagosa Springs in late August and both received standing ovations.
New to the February program will be a fast-paced contemporary work entitled “Time’s Up,” and the world premiere of the pas de deux, “Psalm” — both choreographed by David Taylor.
Also new will be two stunning, sacred dances by G.I. Gurdjieff — “Walking Prayer” and “Ho Yah.” “Walking Prayer” was recently staged for Zikr by internationally-known Gurdjieff movement teacher Amiyo Devienne.
Zikr’s performances have been called, “Deeply moving … bringing the ancient to the new millennium.” Critics have hailed Taylor’s, “depth of spirit and artistic vision, coupled with a degree of creativity that continues to awe.”
