David Taylor brings The Zikr Dance Ensemble back to Pagosa Springs for one performance only, on Saturday, Feb. 2. The company presents works from around the world that focus on the spiritual aspect of dance.

By popular demand, The Zikr Dance Ensemble will return to the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts for one performance only — Saturday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and can  be reserved by calling 731-7469 or online at pagosacenter.org.

Zikr Artistic Director David Taylor is well known to the Pagosa Springs community through numerous tours to Pagosa over the past 15 years with his former company, the David Taylor Dance Theatre.

His new company, however, founded in 2009, has a very different focus. The Zikr Dance Ensemble repertoire springs from Taylor’s lifelong fascination with ancient cultures and dance as both powerful ritual and as a transcendent experience. His new company presents a variety of works from around the world that focus on the spiritual aspect of dance. The program includes dances based on the cultural and spiritual heritage of Tibet, Bali, the Mideast, central Asia, the American Southwest and the tropical rainforests of Brazil.

Zikr’s roster includes some of Colorado’s finest professional ballet dancers and the company has presented successful Colorado performances to rave reviews in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Carbondale, Greenwood Village, Parker and Crested Butte, as well as in St. Paul, Minn., and Los Angeles, Calif.

Zikr presented two performances in Pagosa Springs in late August and both received standing ovations.

New to the February program will be a fast-paced contemporary work entitled “Time’s Up” and the world premiere of the pas de deux,“Psalm” — both choreographed by Taylor.

Also new will be two stunning sacred dances by G.I. Gurdjieff — “Walking Prayer” and “Ho Yah.” “Walking Prayer”was recently staged for Zikr by internationally-known Gurdjieff movement teacher Amiyo Devienne.

Zikr’s performances have been called, “deeply moving … bringing the ancient to the new millennium.”  Critics have hailed  Taylor’s, “depth of spirit and artistic vision, coupled with a degree of creativity that continues to awe.”
