A lively group of dancers from ages 8 to 80 pranced, whirled and twirled through their first square dance lesson with Carla Roberts last Wednesday night.

For many, it was the first time to learn some basic calls such as “Dosado” and “Allemande Left.” A few “angels” with many years of dance experience helped out the newbies. By the end of the 90-minute session, two “squares” of dancers (that is eight in a square) were really catching on and could execute more difficult calls such as “Ladies in, Men Sashay,” “Four Ladies Chain” and a “Right and Left Grand.”

New students are welcome every Wednesday evening from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. at the PLPOA Vista Clubhouse for this eight-week introduction to modern square dancing. Roberts teaches simple calls that are quick to learn in a fun, easygoing and free class open to families, couples and singles. Suggested age for children is at least 8 years old. Call Roberts at 903-6478 to enroll.

Learning how to do these calls and the hundreds more possible can keep a new dancer pleasantly challenged to coordinate the mind and body to the rhythmic cadence of the caller.

With a lot of repetition, dancers become more confident in their ability and a wonderful synergy occurs in a square of eight that is the peak experience of square dancing.

If you have always wondered what it would be like to square dance, don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to learn from right here in Pagosa Springs with caller Roberts every Wednesday evening from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. at the PLPOA Vista Clubhouse, located at 230 Port Ave. To best enjoy dancing, wear comfortable clothes and clean shoes.
