More than 70 CRIA volunteers participated in Chimney Rock Interpretive Association’s annual two-day training at the PLPOA Clubhouse, April 19-20.

The first half-day of training targeted new volunteers and focused on an overview of CRIA’s role at the Chimney Rock National Monument. The second half of the day, Dr. Wendy Sutton, archeologist for the Pagosa Ranger District, San Juan National Forest, led volunteers on a tour of Chimney Rock National Monument that included several stops at off-trail locations not normally visited by the public.

The second day of training focused primarily on an interactive discussion of the core curriculum used by CRIA Tour Guides at the Chimney Rock National Monument. San Juan Forest Service representatives Mark Stiles and Kevin Khung presented CRIA with a plaque honoring Chimney Rock Interpretive Association as the U.S. Forest Service Volunteer Organization of the year for 2012.

Those interested in volunteering at the Chimney Rock National Monument are welcome to join the more than 100 CRIA volunteers who operate the site in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service’s Pagosa Springs Ranger District.

New volunteers who were unable to attend the recent two-day CRIA training will receive individual training in their areas of interest.
