With the start of the school year just around the corner, sports are in full swing at Pagosa Springs High School, including for the 20 members of the cross country team.

The 20 members of the team, eight girls and 12 boys, are readying themselves for their first meet, which is set to take place Aug. 29 in Colorado Springs, and both teams feature a mix of returning and new runners.

On the girls side, two seniors, Emily Bryant and Dana Danielson, will serve as co-captains, and will be joined by returning sophomores Olivia Reinhardt and Taylor Hammer-Lee.

Joining the team’s four returning runners are four freshmen: Maddie Greenly, Megan Ellis, Delany Khung and Andie Miller.

“They’re all good kids,” coach Scott Anderson said, noting, “Emily’s a beast.”

Anderson said he anticipates Bryant, Reinhardt and Hammer-Lee will lead the way for the girls, with Danielson looking to overcome issues related to a long-term injury.

On the boys’ side, four runners are returning from last year’s state team: seniors Tyler Greenly, Mason Chronowski and sophomore Nick Hutcherson.

Joining the four state-experienced team members will be senior Zack Brown, juniors Ben Miller and Chris Archuleta, sophomores Liam O’Brien and Michael Iverson, and freshmen Ethan Brown, Jacob Hughes and Coy Thomas.

“We’ve gotten some good development out of some of our newer runners,” Anderson said, adding that he feels the freshmen will be contributors by the end of the season.

“They should just drive each other,” Anderson said, with Greenly, Hutcherson and Chronowski the likely leaders of the team on the course, with the rest of the Pagosa runners, led by Ellis, likely pushing each other toward the top of the pack. “It should be pretty good.”
