Venturing Crew program to start at St. Patrick’s

Special to The PREVIEW

Outdoor fun and excitement awaits boys, girls, and young adults ages 14 to 21 as a new Venturing Crew begins at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Under the leadership of John Moore, the Venturing Crew will explore outdoor adventures such as kayaking, zip lining, archery, climbing, rappelling and much more.

These activities are designed to provide participants with the opportunity to experience adventures they have never tried before, experiences that help them mature and develop into responsible and caring adults.

The new Venturing Crew will be having an informational meeting on Wednesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 225 South Pagosa Blvd. Even if you are not sure whether Venturing is the right activity for you or your child, you can come and learn more about what the program entails in order to make an informed decision.

“Venturing provides hands-on experiences with people who work in a particular field or have knowledge of it,” Moore said. “For example, the program recognizes the difference between reading about rock climbing and going rock climbing.”

A goal of Venturing is to foster personal and social growth.

“That’s why a Venturing crew organizes a program of activities around citizenship, leadership, service, social activities, fitness and the outdoors,” Moore said. “This kind of program helps us to experience more balance in our lives; to take responsibility for others and our community and to be mentally, emotionally and physically fit.”

Another goal is to learn about leadership from adults who set the example. Members will learn about leadership by experiencing outstanding adult leadership and by practicing leadership.

“With other Venturers you will run your own crew and exercise your own understanding of leadership,” Moore said.

Venturing creates an environment that encourages personal growth in Venturers and in advisers.

This is achieved in a place that is safe, fun and challenging. Venturing provides opportunities for new experiences and new ideas.
