Special to The PREVIEW
The John Brown University Cathedral Choir will conclude their spring tour with a concert at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, March 19, at 7 p.m.
John Brown University, a private Christian school, is located in the beautiful Ozark Mountains in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
The 50-voice choir, under the direction of Paul Smith, has shared their well-honed music with audiences across the country during their annual spring concert tours.
“We feel very fortunate that they have selected Pagosa Springs as their final tour destination on this year’s tour,” said Fr. Doug Neel, rector of St. Patrick’s.
The choir has not limited their tours to the United States, however. In past years, they have extended their travels even as far as Ireland, where the choir performed a selection of compositions from different musical eras to audiences in Ballynahinch, Downpatrick, Portstewart, Carryduff and Bangor.
“Night after night the choir received thunderous ovations,” Smith said. “It was hard to come to the end of the concerts.”
People came from miles around to hear the rich sounds of the choir. Smith recalled that,“an electric hush fell over the audience as they listened intently to the concert.”
“It is rare that a touring choir chooses Pagosa Springs for a concert venue,” said Neel, “though, perhaps with some encouragement, this could be the beginning of a trend. Pagosa Springs is a naturally spiritual environment, a place to which the arts tend to migrate. I am very pleased that the congregation at St. Patrick’s is supportive of offering our church as a concert venue for classical artists. We hope that the community will be supportive of our efforts to bring beautiful music to our town.”
St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Pagosa Springs has become noted for offering excellent musical concerts in a beautiful and acoustically suitable venue. While listening to beautiful music, audiences enjoy the opportunity to gaze through the floor-to-ceiling windows in the transepts that frame the San Juan Mountains and forest views.
The John Brown University Cathedral Choir concert is a part of a new concert series being offered by St. Patrick’s, featuring both visiting and local musicians.
A suggested donation of $10 per person is requested at the door.
Seating is limited, so early arrival is suggested.
St. Patrick’s is located at 225 S. Pagosa Blvd.
