With excavation at the future site of Wal-Mart’s 92,000-square-foot super center in Aspen Village starting on June 6, the unemployment rate for June in Archuleta County fell by half of a percentage point over the month.
There were 352 additional people in the county holding jobs, according to a report issued last week by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment — 6,359 in June compared to 6,007 in May. Overall, there were 341 new workers in the county’s job market, but 11 fewer people were claiming unemployment, which pushed the unemployment rate down from 5.6 to 5.1 percent over the month.
In addition, Archuleta County’s employment picture is quite a bit better than last year, when the June 2013 unemployment rate was 7.4 percent and there were only 6,017 people employed in the county and 482 who claimed unemployment.
