Special to The SUN
With temperatures in the 80s both days, it was the perfect weekend for GECKO’s two swim events, the XTERRA Pagosa Springs off-road triathlon and the PLOW (Pagosa Lakes Open Water Swim Challenge).
With over 100 athletes enjoying the summer heat of Pagosa Springs, there were entries as far afield as Manhattan with representatives from 10 different states.
Over 50 local volunteers helped GECKO stage the events and local businesses once again showed support.
Competitors on both days were treated to Hands On Art Camp’s cute “swimming GECKOs.” The locally made clay medals are becoming a trademark of the GECKO events and a highlight for finishers and age group winners. Scott Slind’s handcrafted metal trophies were also a talking point.
Thanks to everyone that assisted in making the weekend a success for GECKO (Giving Every Child Knowledge of the Outdoors). Proceeds from the weekend go to GECKO’s programs to get kids off the couch, unplugged and outside.
Full results can be found on the GECKO website, www.joingecko.org, with overall winners for the events both dates were as follows.
XTERRA Pagosa Springs
(A 1-mile swim, 16-mile mountain bike, 6.2-mile trail run.)
(Pagosa Lakes Open Water swim)
The next GECKO event is the popular Devil Mountain Ultra (6: 30 a.m.) and Demons of Dust trail run (8 a.m. and 9 a.m.) on Saturday Aug. 23. There is also a kids’ free fun trail race. Registration is open online at www.joingecko.org for 5k, 10k, half-marathon, 50k and 50-mile distances.
