The Colorado Department of Transportation is in the process of upgrading signal cabinets on U.S. 160 through Pagosa Springs. The new signal cabinets will enable uninterrupted power through a battery back-up, as well as provide the option for fiber optic upgrades in the future.
Residents may recall the signal’s recent “flash mode” at Hot Springs Boulevard due to lightning — the upgraded cabinets will safeguard against this type of temporary signal malfunction.
Seven cabinets will ultimately be replaced at each signalized intersection through town — to date, the cabinet at 8th Street has been upgraded and tomorrow, crews will upgrade the one at Pagosa Boulevard.
From 9 a.m. to about 2 p.m. (or earlier) tomorrow, Thursday, July 24, traffic will be reduced to a single lane in all directions and motorists should expect short delays as flaggers direct traffic.
Each cabinet costs approximately $6,000; the work will continue into fall 2014 until all seven intersections through town have received the upgrade.
