Track athletes did not participate in the Pueblo meet last weekend in order to lend their full support to the girl’s basketball team competing at state; not attending the overnight meet also allowed the team to save money.
With the basketball season now over, the girls’ track team has gained new athletes, as basketball girls transition from the court to the track.
Coach O’Donnell anticipates having a full girls team by next Monday, though not in time for the team’s next meet, which is this weekend in Aztec.
Athletes are still trying out different events early in the season to help them determine their strengths.
This weekend, Taylor Strohecker will be competing in the high jump; Payton Shahan will be doing triple jump, sprints and potentially throwing.
Morgan Schaaf has elected to try her hand at throwing, with Madi Lewis set to compete in the 400 and 800 meter runs and possibly relays.
Emily Bryant and Taylor Lee will be the athletes to watch for in the distance and relay events.
Lady Pirate Megan Farrah is currently recovering from an injury; however, O’Donnell anticipates that she, “may be able to make a significant contribution later in the season.”
