The Town of Pagosa Springs is again conducting a Christmas tree recycling program.
Trees to be recycled can be dropped off at the designated site at the south end of South Fifth Street (entrance to the sewer lagoons) any time between now and the end of March. The parks department asks that recyclers remove all lights, tinsel and ornaments before leaving trees.
For more information, call the parks office at 264-4151, ext. 233.
Through an ongoing partnership with Pagosa Springs Middle School and local instructor Jennifer Martin, the Town of Pagosa Springs Recreation Department is offering this program for ages 3 and up. Classes, which will be strictly limited to no more than ten students per age group, began Jan. 7 and will run through Jan. 24.
Cost is $20 for the complete session, but parents will also have the option to pay $40 if they wish to have children in appropriate age groups attend two sessions per week (Tuesday and Thursday sessions, for example). Classes will be held in the middle school “mat room” (wrestling room) according to the following schedule:
Classes for ages 6 and 7 will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-4:50 p.m. Classes for ages 8 and 9 will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-5:50 p.m. Classes for ages 10 and up will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-6:50 p.m.
In addition, classes will be held Fridays from 2-2:50 p.m. for ages 3-5 and from 3-3:50 p.m. for intermediate students (students in this class will need to be pre-approved by the instructor).
There will also be an open-gym session available Fridays from 4-5 p.m. for ages 6 and up (younger students may attend with a parent) at an additional drop-in cost of $5 per session.
Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and have been posted in Adobe format on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com.
For more information, call 264-4151, ext. 232.
Teams in the 9-10 and 11-12 divisions are being finalized and coaches will be contacting players in the next few days.
Schedules will be done by the end of next week. Practices will be held for the next couple of weeks; games will not begin until the week of Jan. 27.
For more information, contact Darren Lewis, recreation supervisor, at 264-4151, ext. 231.
The skate pond behind the River Center is open for the season.
The skate pond’s hours of operation are from dawn to 10 p.m. every day, except during the nights when ice-maintenance operations are being performed.
Resurfacing of the ice will typically be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings unless weather conditions keep the work from taking place. On those nights, the pond will be closed at 6 p.m.
A minimum ice thickness of four inches will be regularly monitored, but thin spots can occur, and an effort to mark them with orange safety cones will be made. Pond users are requested to leave the safety cones in place.
We also ask that no foreign objects be thrown onto the ice. The pond will remain open until safety concerns require its closure. Enjoy the ice.
