Theater kids’ camp gearing up for summer

By Laura Moore
Special to The PREVIEW

Summer is coming, and so is the Whatchamawhozits Children’s Theatre Camp. This amazing adventure takes place the first three weeks in July every summer. It is organized by education director Laura Moore and taught by the Thingamajig’s professional summer stock actors from around the country. The camp is open to kids 7-12 years old. Six and 13 year olds are allowed with special permission.

Week one: July 1-3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On July 4, the kids are invited to participate in the theatre’s float in the Fourth of July Parade. Week one focuses on all the super fun acting games that teach speech, stage presence, character development and improvisation as the children dive into the world of theater.

Week two: July 7-10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In Week two, we start to rehearse for the Disney musical “Cinderella.” With parts ranging from the wicked stepmother to the comedic mice and the stately Duke, both boys and girls will be invested in taking each of their characters to the highest level. The cast will also participate in learning the choreography from professional dancers and practice singing their parts with a talented music director.

Week three: July 14-17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a performance at 2 p.m. on July 19. The kids will hone their new found skills as they rehearse and get ready for a public performance in the professional theater space. With lights, music and costumes galore, they will get to share with their friends and family the joy of their days at camp. Camp ends with a cast party after the show in the Center for the Arts courtyard.
