Disney’s classic musical “The Little Mermaid” is coming to Pagosa this month, as members of the Pagosa Springs High School Music and Theater Department present the show for their 2013 spring musical, for five performances only: April 30-May 4, 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Originally based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and adapted from the 2008 Broadway production, “Mermaid” has lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, music by Alan Menken and book by Dough Wright.

In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But, first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince Prince Eric that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice.

The musical includes the hit songs “Part of Your World”, “She’s in Love,” Kiss the Girl” and the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea.”

The young actors of the high school performing arts program have been in rehearsal since early February, learning vocals, improving acting skills and practicing challenging dance moves.

Cast in lead roles are  Bethany Burnett as Ariel, Johannah Laverty as Flounder, Kitman Gill as Grimsby, Brannon Harbur as Prince Eric, Hayley Hudson as Scuttle, Brayden Mitchell as Sebastian, Sacha Santacruz as Ursula, Ben Reece as King Triton, and Jeremy Medina as Chef Louis.
