The art of listening

A newly elected and very young congresswoman received this advice from a mentor: “You have two ears and one mouth. Let your listening and your speaking be in the same proportion.”

When John Stott listed the disciplines essential to growing as a Christian, he devoted an entire chapter to “the art of listening.” He called it an art, I think, because it involves more than hearing the sounds that enter the ear. Listen not just to the voice, but the tone of voice. Not just the words, but how they are delivered. Not just what is said, but what is left unsaid.
