Support Carl

Dear Editor:

Oprah Winfrey asked him to appear on her program for his expertise on juvenile crime. Heinous crimes he solved as a San Diego homicide detective have been featured on “America’s Most Wanted” and other national television programs. Upon retirement with honors from that department he returned to his home state of Colorado and has continued his career in law enforcement. What an opportunity we have in sheriff’s candidate Carl Smith. Having worked for the Pagosa Springs Police Department as detective and assistant police chief, the Archuleta County Sheriffs’ Office as detective sergeant and captain of the county jail he is already intimately familiar with our local law enforcement agencies. Having worked for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and now a criminal investigator with the Jicarilla Apache Nation, should he be elected, he’ll bring a close working relationship with those agencies as well. Of equal importance is the new relationship he and his deputies will have with us, the citizens of Archuleta County. His plan to implement C.O.P.S., Community Oriented Policing, will allow us to better come to know our deputies and they to know us. We know Carl Smith personally and professionally and are proud to support his candidacy in the Republican primary for sheriff.

If Carl Smith becomes Sheriff, Archuleta County will be destroyed. Every place he has worked knows about his alcohol problem and his lying problem. They will not want any part of a “close working relationship”. Smith is not a good person and should not be Sheriff of any County

What Carl has done since coming back to Pagosa Springs (alcohol and family issues) is more worthy of Maury and Jerry Springer, not Oprah.
