Special to The PREVIEW
This Sunday evening at 5 p.m., St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church will offer its monthly Sunday Night Unplugged service of music and meditation. This month’s featured musician is soprano soloist Darcy DeGuise.
Darcy is well known in town for her starring roles in Curtains Up Pagosa! productions of “Cinderella” and “Man of La Mancha,” where she brought her voice and acting skills to the musical theater stage, but few have had the opportunity to hear her sing in a solo setting. The acoustics at St. Patrick’s offer the perfect venue for her voice to soar. Her musical offerings will include songs by Samuel Barber, Stephen Schwartz, Giacomo Puccini, Aaron Copeland, and Andrew Lloyd Weber. Sally Neel will serve as her accompanist.
DeGuise teaches English literature and the PHTV media class at Pagosa Springs High School and has served as a vocal coach for high school musicals since her arrival in 2010. She and her husband, Matthew, moved here from Denver, where she taught school for nine years. They were looking for a quieter place on the Western Slope and, as luck would have it, a position opened at the high school two weeks before school started. Once she got plugged into her role as teacher, she wasted no time getting involved in the artistic life of the community. She currently serves on the board of directors for Curtains up Pagosa!
Sunday Night Unplugged is a monthly service of music and meditation offered by St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 225 S. Pagosa Blvd. The service is intended to allow participants to enjoy beautiful music, hear readings, offer prayers, and sit in silent meditation. Each month’s service brings different local musicians who offer their talents. The service is free and open to the public.
