Special to The PREVIEW
Pagosa Springs has never let St. Patrick’s Day slip by unnoticed, and, although the festival day falls on a Sunday this year, St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church plans to put on the ‘wearin’ o’ the’green’ and celebrate in a big way.
They will hold a parking lot party in the church parking lot, located at 225 S. Pagosa Blvd, beginning at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 17. There will a St. Patrick’s float, bagpipes, dancing, food and other fun activities for the whole community to enjoy. Non-profits and independent businesses are invited to set up booths to sell their wares.
“We were disappointed that the town elected not to hold their annual parade this year. The parade is about as close to wearing a bishop’s robe and mitre as I ever plan to get,” says Fr. Doug Neel, rector of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Each year at the town’s St. Patrick’s parade, the rector of St. Patrick’s has traditionally donned the bishop’s attire of St. Patrick to lead the parade. “A member of our parish generously and painstakingly made a beautiful new ‘costume’ for me last year, and I have only gotten to wear it once. The members of the parish decided that tradition is important and that if the town leaders weren’t up for a parade this year, we’d do our own! We are Episcopalians, after all, and we stand on tradition! And, I must admit, we do love a good party!”
“We are asking participants to bring a few canned goods to contribute to the food pantry at the church. Beyond that, come and have a great time!” says Jim Dorian, bagpiper and member of St. Patrick’s. “We’ll have a grand time!”
