Special to The PREVIEW
The Book Nook at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church will hold a special summer used book sale, open to the public this Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Books are priced at rock bottom prices, with paperbacks only a quarter and hardbacks a dollar.
The Book Nook, originally a part of the church’s annual summer Shamrock Festival, took on a life of its own a number of years ago, when Bonnie Brookes, Book Nook coordinator, realized there was a need for inexpensive reading material in the community and saw there was a potential for the ministry to be a continuous source of funding for church outreach programs.
The books are priced so people will purchase books, read them, return them and purchase more.
“We want to encourage people to read, and at the same time we want to help support our outreach ministries,” said Brookes. The Book Nook provides a welcome outlet for those whose home bookshelves are overrun with books.
“By donating our used books, we give others the opportunity to enjoy the books and, in turn, we receive a great opportunity to purchase different books at ridiculously low prices. It really is a win-win deal,” said Brookes.
There is a large variety of used books to pick up this Saturday that will give you weeks of reading pleasure. If you wish, you can donate them back to the Book Nook for resale after you have read them. Those quarters and dollars add up to help support the church’s food box ministry.
Patrons of the Book Nook will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a beautiful handmade queen-sized quilt and matching pillows ($1 each or 12 tickets for $10) made by the women of the church. The winning ticket is to be drawn at the annual Shamrock Festival on Aug. 17.
Or, you can purchase raffle tickets for the handmade bamboo fly rod, reel and case, and guided fishing trip, along with some fly fishing extras, for $20 per ticket. Only 300 tickets will be sold, so chances of winning are good. All the proceeds from the raffles will be distributed among area non-profits.
Book Nook doors will open at 9 a.m. Saturday in the building adjacent to the main church building. St. Patrick’s is located at 225 S. Pagosa Blvd.
