Fresh off a day of scrimmages against Front Range teams in Denver last Saturday, the Pagosa Springs High School begins regular-season action today, with a 4 p.m. game in Salida.
The Pirates also began their season against Salida last year.
In 2012, the Pirates fell to the Spartans 6-0, but went on to win five straight en route to a 10-5 season record that included a 9-3 league stint.
“We have our work cut out for us,” coach Lindsey Kurt-Mason said of the Salida game.
The Pirates fell to Basalt in top 32 action in 2012, and are looking to return to playoffs in 2013.
With one senior and several returning juniors and sophomores, the team hopes to pick up where it left off last year, with Kurt-Mason noting during the preseason that he felt the team was beginning at a higher level this year.
“We lost a lot of good seniors last year, but these underclassmen are picking up a lot of slack,” Kurt-Mason said during the preseason, adding, “I think we’ve started at a much higher level this year.”
Following today’s game in Salida, the team has a break until Sept. 7, when it heads to Center for a league match.
The Pirates’ first home game of the season is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. versus Montezuma-Cortez High School.
