Ski team: Elements of a perfect storm are in place

Special to The SUN

The Wolf Creek Ski Team gained some serious momentum this year. With racers aged 6 to 16 running drills every Saturday, we have strengthened the foundation of a program that is poised to explode out of the gates next season.

All the elements of a perfect storm are in place, with kids who love racing, great coaches, parents who love racing as much as the kids, and local sponsors all coming together on the mountain with the most snow and the best ski area staff in Colorado.

For the first time this year, we hosted the Wolf Creek Invitational and, thanks to coach Erik Hittle, team members sported their official WC Ski Team jackets.

Annabelle Bowles reflected, “Twenty years from now, I will still remember racing at nationals and being a part of the first official Wolf Creek Ski Team — with the jackets.”

Head coach Dean Sell is a fierce competitor himself, and the perfect head coach for the team. He has a deep personal knowledge of ski racing technique and tactics, paired with a background in outdoor education and counseling. He is absolutely awesome with kids, and they love him.  Sell qualified to compete in the Platinum Men’s Alpine Division at NASTAR Nationals.

Corbin Horrocks, David and Annabelle Bowles, Nolan and Rhead Kay, and Ian Roth represented the Wolf Creek Ski Team at the NASTAR Nationals in Aspen/Snowmass this year.

We have 6 year olds carving and practicing with teenagers like 16-year-old Ian Roth. Roth’s accomplishments this year include winning first place two times at the Durango Purg Cup, a second-place finish in Silverton and qualifying NASTAR Gold, finishing fourth in his age category at nationals — all in his first year racing with the team.

Ski mom Chantelle and coach Joseph Jordan qualified for nationals in the alpine and telemark division. They both chose to compete telemark, won their age groups, and progressed to the Race of Champions. Chantelle Jordan outperformed the competition in the one-run, do-or-die format, earning second place on the podium with the second fastest telemark time in the entire competition.

Larry Fisher qualified and raced alpine and telemark. Fisher won his age group telemark and went on to place third for a podium finish at the Race of Champions NASTAR Nationals 2014.

Racing at nationals was a great experience for team members, who also got to meet AJ Kitt, Stacey Cook, Katlyn Richardson and Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety.
