Save the Colorado River

Last week’s article by Bruce Babbitt was a wake up call for us on the San Juan River, one of Colorado’s main tributaries to the Colorado River. He says, “The River and its tributaries are still overdrawn by more than a million acre-feet annually; an amount in consumption equaled by four cities the size of Los Angeles.” He suggested that an equitable pathway for reducing the deficit involves retiring less than 10% of irrigated agriculture production: 3 million acres of mostly alfalfa and forage crops. I asked myself: “Should farmers be the ones making changes?”
