Sales tax shows significant increase for February

The local sales tax collections received by Archuleta County last week for the month of February continue to show skewed results, with the Colorado Department of Revenue crediting the local economy with a lot more growth than it actually had.

According to a report issued last week by Archuleta County Finance Director Larry Walton, the gross amount of the February 2015 sales tax was $547,896.48, while total collections in February of 2014 (one year ago) were $428,721.37, which seems to indicate that over-the-year collections grew by $119,175, or 28 percent.

However, Walton explained that more than half of the increase, or $62,521, was related to prior years — going back as far as 2011 — and with those factored out, the February increase was actually only $56,654 or 13.2 percent.

Looks as if the rec. center folks were right about the sales tax continuing to grow. Oh well.

No, in order for them to be right on this one very narrow issue we’d have to see 5% or greater sales tax revenue growth every single year for the next 25 years. Not one year. That was after the proposed 1% tax increase. The rec center ballot issue failed for many very very good reasons, and even if they had been “right” about sales tax growth for 25 years it still would have been a catastrophe.

The rec center people were so profoundly wrong and so cravenly dishonest about so many things it is impossible to address them all here. I suggest you go to the front page of the Sun website, scroll down to the “most read” articles and start reading the top four or five comments sections.

That is unless you are actually one of the following players from that ugly dispute, just now under a new screen name: Brian Griffin, Pennyonnadolla, Billy Skipper, etc.

You’re not even close, but again – oh well.
