SUN Columnist

The Ross Aragon Community Center, along with the Town of Pagosa Springs Parks and Recreation Department, is offering two new fitness classes for local youngsters ages 4 and under: Mommy and Me and Overcoming Obstacles.

Brittany Twiss, a certified children’s fitness instructor, will lead both classes and brings many unique ideas to each.

Mommy and Me helps teach children how to make healthy choices and introduces children to fitness fun. This class starts on May 7 and will run through May 28 on Tuesdays at the community center from 9:30-10:30 a.m. for ages 2 and under. A second class for ages 3 and 4 will be held Tuesdays from 10:45-11:45 a.m.

Overcoming Obstacles introduces children to health and nutrition in ways that are easy for toddlers to comprehend. This class also includes age-appropriate obstacles to help enhance balance, cardiovascular health and spatial awareness. This class begins May 9 and will run through May 30 on Thursdays at the community center from 9:30-10:30 a.m. for ages 2 and under. A second class will be held Thursdays from 10:45-11:45 a.m. for ages 3-4.

Each class includes four sessions for $32. For parents interested in all eight sessions (both classes) the cost will be $55.

Both classes consist of parent and child participation. Class size is very limited; registrations are available at the community center front desk, recreation office and online through the recreation department link at www.townofpagosasprings.com.

For more information, call 264-4152.

Youth baseball

Registration for this year’s youth baseball leagues will run through Friday, May 3.

The recreation office will accept registrations for coach-pitch division (ages 6, 7 and 8), and the 9- and 10-year-old division. The office will also accept registrations for the 11-12 division and 13-14 division, but if the number of registrations submitted is not sufficient to support play in these age brackets, registration fees may be refunded and formal league play may be canceled.

Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and are available for download through the recreation department link at www.townofpagosasprings.com. Registrations will be disbursed to local schools, as well. All registrations should be submitted to the recreation office.

Cost to participate in the program is $30 per player and $15 for each additional child in the same family who participates. Team coaches and sponsors are needed and appreciated.

The season is tentatively scheduled to begin in early June and should run through mid-July; for more information, call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

Gymnastics

Classes, which have been strictly limited to no more than 10 students per age group, began April 16 and will run through May 17. Classes will be held in the middle school “mat room” (wrestling room) according to the following schedule.

Classes for ages 6 and 7 will be held Tuesdays and/or Thursdays (parents have the option to choose one day or the other, but not both) from 4-4:50 p.m.

Classes for ages 8 and 9 will be held Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 5-5:50 p.m.

Classes for ages 10 and up will be held Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 6-6:50 p.m.

In addition, classes will be held Fridays from 2-2:50 p.m. for ages 4 and 5, and an introductory class for ages 3 and 4 will be held Fridays from 3-3:50 p.m. Class size for Fridays will be limited to eight.

Baseball clinic

Registration is now open for a free baseball clinic which will be hosted by local coaches and instructors at the high school ball fields May 3-4.

The clinic is open to boys and girls ages 8-13. Participants will receive instruction and repetitions aimed at developing fundamental skills for throwing, fielding, pitching and catching. All skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and at the middle school front desk. Registrations can also be downloaded in Adobe format from the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com.

The clinic will run from 5-7:30 p.m. on May 3 and from 8:30 a.m.-noon on May 4. Parents and coaches are welcome to stay throughout the clinic to observe and will be encouraged to help reinforce drills at home, practices and games. Participants will need to bring their own gloves and drinks. Since this is not a hitting clinic, no bats will be allowed.
