Dear Editor:

Regarding the need for a rec center, e.g., it would give our young folks something to do.

Just open The Pagosa SUN every week of the year and you find many, many pictures of our children and young folks doing things — all of them healthy activities. They are involved in all kinds of outdoor sports, all kinds of indoor sports, scouting activities through both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, 4-H club activities, music and drama — you name it! There are ample healthy activities for all ages here in Pagosa without having to raise taxes to support something that obviously is not needed by our locals.

As to our tourism needs: well, that is certainly a laugh. Most tourists have rec centers where they live. They come here to breathe our fresh air and participate in activities that are not possible where they live — hiking in our mountains, playing in and floating down our river, fishing our beautiful streams, and enjoying all those winter activities that our wonderful snow provides. And, of course, our outstanding music and drama offerings are certainly a plus.

So, if the folks want to up their taxes, then spend that money to fast-forward great ideas already begun. And, by the way, we don’t need Wal-Mart to do this for us — we have great retailers who have been here for us all along. Let’s support them! The rewards are just as great as anything Wal-Mart can bring. As I have said before, “What is wrong with being unique?”
