Special to The PREVIEW
The Pagosa Ranger District is announcing free programs for the week of June 16-28. Walks and Talks take place in and around the San Juan National Forest unless otherwise noted in the program description. Programs may be canceled due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Sturdy footwear is recommended for those attending walks and bring water to drink.
Get Fired Up!
Friday, June 20, 1:30-2:45 p.m.
Fire prevention is everybody’s responsibility. Please join Jodi Mallozzi, fire prevention technician, for an in-depth discussion about fire’s role in our forest ecosystem and how we can prevent unwanted human-caused fires. This talk is best suited for ages 14 and up. The location of this talk is Nick’s Hangar, off of Piedra Road.
Look Who’s Talking
Saturday, June 21, 9-11:30 a.m.
Join local researcher Peggy Bergon on this 3-mile hike from the Buckles Lake trailhead as she shares with you examples of the “tree talk” the sheepherders left, while weaving in the story of the early sheep industry in Archuleta County.
Directions: Drive south on U.S. 84 for about 19 miles, turn left on Buckles Lake Road (F.S. 663) and follow it to the end — about 7 miles. Due to the nature of the walk, it is limited to 12 participants; to reserve a spot, call the Pagosa Ranger District at 264-2268.
Family Adventures in the Woods —Take Only Pictures, Leave Only Footprints
Thursday, June 26, 10-11:30 a.m.
Join Donovan and Jill Porterfield for some fun family outdoor adventures this summer. We will explore easily accessible areas of our beautiful mountain woods, while together learning more about a unique and wonderful place — the San Juan National Forest.
For convenience, we will begin our adventures each time at the parking area on the left side of Piedra Road just after the first cattle guard, about 5.5 miles north of U.S. 160. Bring a picnic if you and your family would like to join Donovan and Jill for lunch after the walk.
Children of all ages are welcome to join the fun. All walks will be short in length, but long in careful observation and discovery. Please leave your four-legged friends home, and all children must be joined by an adult. All dates are weather permitting. Dress appropriately for the weather and bring plenty of water.
Look for other Family Adventures in the Woods coming July 24 (Who Pooped Here?) and Aug. 21 (Predator and Prey, or Who Eats Whom?).
For additional information, please contact the Pagosa Ranger District at 264-2268 or stop by and pick up a free Walks and Talks brochure at the front desk. Hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at 180 Pagosa St.
