Positive change

Dear Editor:

With Pathways to Responsible Fatherhood, the Getting Ahead in a just Gettin’ by World (GA) workshop is off to a great start.

Last year, when I facilitated this class I saw a great outcome with all of the clients who attended. This is where the idea of surviving changes to thriving, and eventually giving back is shared. This year, I expect to see the same outcomes. It is refreshing to see people making positive changes in our community.

We are currently teaching the GA workshop with families in mind; refreshments and childcare are provided. We currently have over 30 people attending and couldn’t do it without the support of Linda Stuckwish, Barbara Hendricks, Joanne Irons, and Mark Smith to mention just a few; there are so many more.

Also, in our DADS Group, we have been exploring the idea that if we carry bad experiences from our past relationships into new relationships nothing changes. We continually talk about what men can do to prevent family violence, by simply teaching early, being there, listening, and much more.

Over the past few weeks especially, I have felt as though this is making a difference in the youth of our community. There have been multiple times that clients have come in to my office and told me that they tried what we talked about in group with their family and it really worked.

We have also increased our bilingual capabilities started or increased collaborations with the Pregnancy Center, Wellness Center, Archuleta County Victim Assistance Program (ACVAP), The Training Advantage (TTA), Sheriff’s Department, 6th Judicial Self Help Center, and many more agencies to help clients immerse themselves in the community proactively.

In conclusion, these are just a few good things that are happening as there are too many to mention. I feel an overflowing positive buzz circulating around Pagosa. I am looking forward to another great year of serving our community.
