Pirates win thriller to capture state crown

Fifty three years!

It has been 53 years — 1960 wasn’t just the last time; it was the only time — since the Pagosa Springs Pirates boys’ basketball team has won the state championship.

Before Coach Randy Sorenson’s team even arrived at the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins last week, he told SUN staff, “We feel that these kids are not done yet; they have higher goals than to just get to state. It will be a dog fight, but we feel like we have a chance.”
