Pirate golfers finish season at state tournament

Staff Writer

The season is officially over for the Pagosa Springs High School golf team.

Two of the team’s golfers took part in state action earlier this week to wrap up the season.

At the tournament, junior Jake Keuning finishing in a four-way tie for 56th, and senior Casey Mudroch finishing 81st.

A total of 86 golfers took part in the two-day tournament, with one withdrawing prior to the finish.

The tournament was held at the Pueblo Country Club, a course built in 1903 that proved to be difficult to play. The tournament’s top golfer, from Basalt, finished one stroke under par, and was the only golfer to finish at or below par.

“The first day was pretty rough on them,” coach Mark Faber said. “They struggled.”

En route to 56th place, Keuning shot 23 over Monday to finish with a 94 on the par-71 course. Tuesday, he finished 11 over, shooting an 82, totaling 34 over par for the tournament.

“The second day, Jake played extremely well,” Faber said.

Total for the tournament, Keuning shot par on nine holes, and birdie on four holes.

Mudroch, in his first season to make regionals and state, shot 25 over at the tournament Monday, finishing the day with 96 strokes. Tuesday, Mudroch continued to struggle, shooting 32 over to finish the day with 103 strokes. Overall, Mudroch shot 57 over par at the tournament.

Mudroch shot par on seven holes during the tournament, and had a birdie on one hole.

“I’m proud of both of them. They stayed after it both days, Faber said. “They’ve come a long way over the last few years.”
